Develop rail, widen highways or have it both ways? When it comes to mobility, the country’s transport policies and stakeholders have been debating, if not arguing, for months. The issue is hot. And it is not Ofrou (the Federal Roads Office) which will say the opposite. Its annual report devoted to national roads published Monday shows that traffic jams have never poisoned the daily lives of the Swiss as much as in 2023.

National roads, led by the A1 motorway, are seriously affected by traffic overload. In 2023, vehicles have been stuck in traffic jams for 48,807 hours, the equivalent of around five and a half years – on national roads alone. A record and an increase of 22.4% compared to 2022, indicates Ofrou. Enough to fuel discussions since this same Monday, five French-speaking economic organizations defended the widening of the section of the A1 motorway between Nyon and Le Vengeron, to two three lanes. Against them, the Transport and Environment Association (ATE) and Actif-trafiC, among others, believe that increasing road capacity will act as a breather.
