In Geneva, a study by the cantonal statistics office (OCSTAT) reveals a net pay gap of 27% to the disadvantage of women in 2022. The authorities, who denounce an “alarming situation”, call for compliance with the legislation in force.

Equality is still far from being achieved, deplores the Department of Finance, Human Resources and External Affairs (DF) in a press release on Thursday. The canton promises regular statistical monitoring to better target its action in terms of equality in the professional environment.

OCSTAT’s analysis shows that inequalities are particularly marked at the ends of the salary distribution: women are strongly over-represented in low salaries and under-represented in very high incomes. This result can be explained by inequalities in access to positions of responsibility, a high proportion of part-time work among women and still strongly anchored gender stereotypes.

2nd pillar affected

The occupancy rate has a significant influence on income. In Geneva, 51% of women work part-time, compared to 21% of men. This difference immediately affects wages, but also has delayed consequences. It exerts direct pressure on the amount of old-age pensions, notes the FD.

However, analysis of standardized gross salary reveals that even for equal working hours, women remain significantly less paid than men (-15.6%). A small part of this inequality is explained by objective differences, such as professional position or economic branch, but most of this gap is explained by inequality in salary treatment.

A practical guide

Thus, with equal skills, characteristics and activity rate, women still earn 7.9% less than men. Faced with these findings, the office for the promotion of equality and prevention of violence (BPEV) calls for awareness and action on the part of employers. He publishes a practical guide on the subject.

OCSTAT also offers a new dynamic module which highlights the figures linked to salary gaps. It also offers a series of indicators linked to the problem of inequality between women and men, in areas as diverse as demography, training, employment, health, politics and violence.
