Apple still makes us dream with the new version of CarPlay

The new generation of CarPlay is arriving on cars at the end of the year, and it looks promising! On the menu: more personalization options, new applications and personalized alerts.

iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, watchOS 11, visionOS 2, ChatGPT and Apple Intelligence… During WWDC 2024, Apple announced, once again, the new generation of CarPlay. On the program: personalization, new applications and tailor-made alerts. Everything was announced during a dedicated session.

Extensive customization to adapt to each vehicle

One of the main improvements of this new version of CarPlay lies in the possibility for manufacturers to personalize the interface in order to adapt it to the aesthetics of their vehicle. The images revealed by Apple show that the system is capable of adapting to the screens integrated into the car itself.

Manufacturers will also be able to choose whether or not to display certain elements in the interface. For example, one of the images shows CarPlay on a screen that practically takes up the dashboard, with a clean background and elements such as the clock, the playback control or a simple view of the dashboard.

New applications for an even more complete experience

Apple also shared images showing two of the apps that will come to the system by default. The first is the Vehicle application, which allows access to different settings of the car itself. The second is the Clima app, which displays climate controls. These two applications have a design very similar to what Apple includes in their respective operating systems, with an interface adapted to car screens.

The next generation CarPlay will offer personalized alerts. In other words, manufacturers can include notifications in the system to, for example, know the charging status or if an element of the car breaks down. Apple will also adapt the interface for vehicle cameras.

Car manufacturers, a challenge for Apple

If these new features look promising, it remains for Apple to convince its partners. Indeed, several car manufacturers have already slammed the door on negotiations in the past. The Apple brand will therefore have to redouble its efforts to attract manufacturers and offer them an innovative automotive experience adapted to their needs. This new generation of CarPlay is arriving at the end of the year, but at present, we do not know which car manufacturer will play the game.
