POLITICS – A deafening silence. It seems a long time ago when Marine Le Pen appeared all smiles in front of the cameras the day after Donald Trump's victory in the United States. “ I dare to repeat here that the election of Donald Trump is good news for France,” she proclaimed on November 9, 2016. As you can see in our video at the top of the articleeight years later, the RN is playing it quiet and tight-lipped.
Since the candidate's first term, water has flowed under the bridge, and the National Rally is no longer as inclined to support Donald Trump, who no longer finds any echo in France. Indeed, while the RN wants to prepare to become a government party, the Trumpist model seems far from being able to help it achieve this objective.
General discomfort at the RN
Faced with questions from journalists, the RN deputies interviewed in recent weeks try to hide their unease. “ I support the one who best protects the interests of the French,” says MP Laure Lavalette on the France 2 set on September 16, without deciding on a name.
« Me, you know, I don't necessarily believe like that which falls from the sky », prefers to answer Jean-Philippe Tanguy on the set of Grand Jury on November 3. As for the president of the National Rally Jordan Bardella, he prefers to hide behind his nationality: “JI am not an American citizen and therefore I will respect the vote of American votershe assures while admitting to loving “ patriotism » the Donald Trump.
A change in attitude which is probably explained by the exacerbated excess and radicalism of the American candidate, which goes against the French party's quest for respectability. The storming of the Capitol in Washington on January 6, 2021, or the threats that his possible re-election would pose to women's rights have also deeply tainted his image in France, even within the RN.
