Mental health is still too often neglected. Some people take care of their physical health but neglect their mental health. “Health is both physical and mental. We are often in the habit of first taking care of the health of the body before that of the mind. However, we can do both at the same time,” explains Alison Verlaet, communications manager at Un Pass dans l’Impasse, an association of the Solidaris Network, active in suicide prevention.
To take care of your mind, there are first some good habits to adopt. “Yoga, for example, helps you de-stress. Sophrology allows you to relax. There are also breathing techniques to calm down.” How often ? “You can do yoga once a week, perhaps in a group class, then reproduce it at home when you are alone. Breathing or relaxation techniques can also be done once a week and then when we feel the need,” adds Alison Verlaet. “In any case, if the practice is regular, it is beneficial.”
Time for yourself
Taking care of your mind also means taking care of your head. “Taking care of your head is also possible. For example, by making an appointment with your hairdresser or beautician. You can treat yourself to small moments with a massage or a day at the spa. Because when you take care of yourself physically or your appearance, you also take care of your mind.”
Any last advice? “We enjoy family time, we do crafts, volunteer… All these little things that make us feel good. And we shouldn’t hesitate to go see a psychologist preventively to talk about our life and sometimes what’s going wrong,” she concludes.
