Roland-Garros | Djokovic qualifies for quarterfinals, but gets injured

(Paris) Injured in the right knee, Novak Djokovic nonetheless disgusted Francisco Cerundolo who thought he was holding him in his hand: after 4:39 and five sets, it was the 37-year-old Serb who was qualified Monday for the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros. But will he be able to play them?

Looking for a 25e Grand Slam title and his fourth on Parisian soil, he defeated the Argentinian (27e world) 6-1, 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 and should play his 59e Grand Slam quarter-final (record, one more than Federer), 18e in Paris where he also set the new record for Major victories (370, one more than Federer).

But at the end of the match, he explained that he had hurt his right knee when he slipped in the third game of the second set.

“I started to feel pain. It completely destabilized me for two sets, two and a half sets. I no longer wanted to settle into too long exchanges. Every time he gave me a drop shot or a sudden change of direction, I felt bad. At one point, I didn’t know if I should continue or not. I was given treatment and, after the end of the third set, I asked for more,” Djoko said.

Forced full of anti-inflammatories, he was able to finish and win, but what about the future? “I don’t know what will happen tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, or if I will be able to get on the court and play,” he said.

Title holder, Djokovic must reach the final to still retain his place as world No.1, threatened by Jannik Sinner.

Zverev survives Rune after 4 hours 11 minutes of struggle

Alexander Zverev, world No.4 and title contender, qualified for the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros, beating 4-6, 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 (7/2), 6 -2 the Dane Holger Rune (13e) after 4:11 a.m. of the match, during the night from Monday to Tuesday.

The 27-year-old German will try on Wednesday to reach the final four of the event for the fourth year in a row, by facing the Australian Alex De Minaur (11e) who eliminated the Russian Daniil Medvedev (5e) in 8e of final.

Zverev, who had already been pushed to five sets in the previous round by the Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor, this time did not resort to the super tiebreaker, because he was able to make the difference earlier in the final set. He nevertheless had to go through a decisive game in the 4e round to reverse a fairly compromised situation.

Medvedev eliminated by De Minaur

In the next round, he will face the outgoing double finalist Casper Ruud (7e), winner of the American Taylor Fritz (12e) 7-6 (8/6), 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

The other quarter-final will be between Australian Alex De Minaur (11e) who defeated the Russian Daniil Medvedev (5e), to the winner of the meeting between Alexander Zverev (4e) and Holger Rune (11e), scheduled for Monday evening.

Medvedev, hampered by a blister on his right foot, was beaten 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 by De Minaur who seemed unable to come back from reaching the quarters at Roland Garros.

“I didn’t think I would make it to the quarterfinals here, because in recent years I haven’t played well on clay,” commented the 25-year-old who until now had never even made it past the 2e round.

For his part, Medvedev explained that he had suffered from a blister “which became irritated”, while insisting on the fact that his opponent had “played better”.
