  • The number of politically motivated violent events has been increasing in the Western world in recent years.

  • An ever-increasing proportion of the population, particularly in and the United States, considers that the use of violence is legitimate to assert their opinion.

  • The absence of real ideology characterizes current political violence, making it more unpredictable and therefore more worrying.

  • Faced with the rejection of the State and its representatives which fuels violence, the solutions seem limited and divide specialists.

A heavily armed man was arrested on October 12 in California near a Donald Trump campaign rally. If the suspect’s intentions remain unclear, the speed with which he was apprehended testifies to the tense climate reigning around the Republican presidential candidate, and for good reason. On September 15, gunshots rang out in the distance, while the former American president was enjoying a round of golf at his Florida club. In July, he was injured in the ear by gunfire during a meeting in Pennsylvania. Previously, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was seriously shot during a public event in May. Add to this the clashes between activists and the police during a mobilization against megabasins in France, as well as the racist riots which engulfed several cities in the United Kingdom in the middle of summer.

As hectic as it was, this sequence is not exceptional. It is a reflection of political violence which has been increasing in intensity in our societies in recent years. According to figures from the Global Terrorism Database (GTD), several regions of the world are facing an increase in violent events.
