“She has everything going for her. She’s smart, so smart. She’s a businesswoman and she knows how to captivate her audience.”

Like all Swifties, Marie-Anne de Champlain is fascinated by Taylor Swift’s talent and the exceptional closeness with her audience that she has developed over the years.

“I am in the Simple Plan and Green Day fan groups, but never has an artist managed to capture my attention like her in marketing with the clues (the famous easter eggs) that she gives when she releases an album or those that she places in her music videos.”

This complicity and goodwill snowballed among Swifties. They form a community where mutual aid, love and sharing reign.

Emma Thibault experienced it when she took the plane with her twin sister to go see her idol in this summer.

“At the Montreal airport, we had our Taylor Swift sweaters on and we saw other Swifties with their merch. We weren’t even on the plane before we met some Swifties and exchanged bracelets. […] With the Swifties, we are in a safe space (safe space). The evening after the concert, even though my cell phone battery was empty, I didn’t feel in danger going back to the hotel because there were just people in glitter in the street.

Taylor’s files

Former employee of the Universal record company, Quebecer Paul Jessop had the privilege of closely following the rise of Taylor Swift.

It was notably through him that she gave her only interview on Quebec television, on the show Everyone is talking about itSeptember 28, 2014.

He saw how the most popular singer on the planet goes about establishing meaningful contact with her admirers.

“During the meet and greet [rencontre avec des spectateurs avant ou après les concerts]I had to fill out a file about each person she met with a photo. Several artists do it and Taylor comes from the country school where they want to have as much detail as possible,” says the man who had filled out a form when his own daughter was entitled to a moment with Taylor Swift.

“I mentioned that she loves cats and the names of her cats.”

A year later, new meeting with Paul’s daughter.

“She sees my daughter, she calls her name and starts asking her how her cats are. She had just gone from 20 to 30 people before, that doesn’t make sense. I thought she had an earpiece and someone was whispering the information to her.”

At children’s height

A few years later, Paul Jessop found himself at Taylor Swift’s house in New York for one of his famous listening sessions to which the artist likes to invite Swifties and industry people.

“When I saw her at the condo, I said to her: the forms we filled out for you, can’t you remember all that? She said: I go through each sheet. The people who are important to you, they are important to me too.”

A highlight of every Taylor Swift concert: when she meets a child and gives him her hat.

According to Mr. Jessop, she pays particular attention to the youngest.

“When she meets children, she quickly stands at their height to look them in the eyes. It’s exceptional because not all artists do that. She wants to get on their level to be able to enter their bubble and let them enter hers.
