Accused of collaboration with Malian forces and their allies, the spiritual guide was allegedly kidnapped at the end of December 2023. The audio, ambiguous and unauthenticated, evokes his possible death, plunging Mali into consternation.
A recording attributed to Amadou Koufa, head of Katiba Macina, component of the Support Group for Islam and Muslims (GSM), JNIM according to its Arabic acronym, evokes the fate of Thierno Amadou Hady Tall, grandson of Cheick Oumar Tall and general caliph of the Omarian brotherhood of Nioro of the Sahel. In this audio message, the number two of the jihdist coalition affiliated with AQIM implicitly suggests that the spiritual guide has died.
The date of the recording remains undetermined, but its content arouses strong emotion in Mali, fueling concern and doubt. Even if no official confirmation has been made, Koufa’s comments reinforce the hypothesis of the death of Thierno Tall, plunging his supporters and a large part of the Muslim community into uncertainty.
Thierno Amadou Hady Tall was kidnapped on December 26, 2023 under conditions that are still unclear. Koufa justifies this act with accusations of collaboration with the Malian armed forces and their allies, in particular Wagner, described as “Taghut” by jihadist groups. He also claims that the caliph would have ordered reprisals against Muslims suspected of supporting jihadists, while citing elements not disclosed to date.
In his message, Koufa indicates that Thierno Tall was held by their forces but that he “did not arrive at his destination”, leaving ambiguity over his fate. The mention of an “Islamic tribunal” to judge the caliph raises questions about the nature of this procedure and its purpose. No hard evidence confirms his survival, and certain passages of the recording reinforce the idea that he could be dead.
The Malian authorities have not yet commented on this incident. Meanwhile, the Nioro region in the Sahel, stronghold of the Omarian brotherhood, is going through a period of great instability, aggravated by the rise in power of armed jihadist groups which are modifying local balances and weakening the traditional links between the populations and the authorities. . . religious.
Despite growing doubts, part of the community continues to hope that Thierno Amadou Hady Tall is still alive, even if Koufa’s statements suggest a tragic outcome.
