Dune: Part II is a cinematic event that is perhaps the best sci-fi film of 2024 according to critics, marking a major entry into the genre. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, the sequel explores the complex world of Frank Herbert, following Paul Atreides’ journey with the Fremen on Arrakis.
The end of the year is coming and since it is time for retrospectives, it is worth remembering that Dune 2 is considered the best science fiction film of the year, as evidenced by its score of 92% on the press side on Rotten Tomatoes, and 95% on the public side. Dune: Part Two, directed by Denis Villeneuve, has received considerable attention, with audiences praising its visual and aural experience both internationally and in France. On Allociné, audience-wise, the film has an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 from more than 1,300 reviews, which is higher than the rating of the first film. This makes it the highest rated film of 2024 so far, surpassing other releases. There are of course some more nuanced critics who found the film emotionally distant, or superficial and sterile, with an overuse of spectacle that leaves gaps in the narrative. But overall, many praise the direction, but also the technical aspects of the film, including sound, camerawork, visual effects and editing. As a sequel, it works for the same reasons that make The Empire Strikes Back many people’s favorite Star Wars movie: there’s a darkness, a bleakness, that makes the moments where you cry out are all the more deserved.
Soon at the Oscars?
Dune 2 is the second part of a planned adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic science fiction novel. The film delves deeper into the world of Arrakis, following Paul Atreides’ journey with the Fremen people. It picks up where Dune: Part One leaves off, as Paul seeks revenge on those who destroyed his family. Paul must navigate between his feelings for Chani and his visions of a future war, his growing visions of the future revealing to him the potential for billions of deaths.
If the next Oscar nominees will not be revealed until January 2025, many hope that the film will be present at the ceremony, and this is the case of Josh Brolin, playing Gurney Halleck in the two films of the series : “If (Denis Villeneuve) is not nominated this year, I will end my career. (Dune 2) is a better film than the first. […] It is a masterpiece and Denis is one of the virtuosos of our time. If the Oscars have any interest, they will recognize it.”
