Finally a good film for the Spider-Man universe? If the Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures co-productions are very successful, Tom Holland’s Peter Parker has managed to raise more than 3.8 billion since Homecoming in 2017, not all the characters owned by Columbia Pictures benefit from the same enthusiasm. The first two opuses of the saga Venom surprised and grossed more than $800 and $500 million respectively at the worldwide box office. The critics were never enthusiastic but the public seemed to have taken a liking to Eddie Brock and his symbiote.
Other productions dedicated to the characters who evolve in the universe of Spider-Man in the comics did not take long to see the light of day but none has managed to shine in the same way. Morbius et Madame Web were flops, calling into question the merits of such a license. It must be said that Sony only holds the adaptation rights to a tiny part of the protagonists on glossy paper, and that it must find a way to exploit them without thwarting the plans of the MCU. It is for this reason that Spider-Man has never appeared among his friends, that the narration of these spin-offs always focuses on undoing what it undertook a few opuses earlier.
We can cite the appearance of Eddie Brock in a post-credits scene of Spider-Man : No Way Home. The character invited himself into the reality of Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, before being sent back manu militari into his own universe. We were also able to see Morbius cross paths with Michael Keaton’s Vulture, even though the two protagonists were not supposed to evolve on the same multiversal level. This meeting will never have been mentioned in more detail, Morbius not having had the opportunity to deliver the rest of his adventures to the cinema.
In this month of December 2024, a few months after the disappointing results of Venom 3it is with Kraven the Hunter that spectators meet in dark rooms. The lights are far from being green for this film which must, in addition to evolving within a license in distress, face what could be one of the biggest successes of the year 2024 in cinema. Facing Le Roi Lion : Paperback, Kraven the Hunter will he succeed in attracting the public’s attention? Even the director has some doubts. During an interview with ComicBookJC Chandor wanted to send a message to the spectators. “Give our film a chance”.
“Some fans were unhappy”
The director, known for directing Triple Frontier et A Most Violent Yearassures that he has done everything possible to preserve his footage. He particularly mentions its uniqueness within a license which wants to play the connectivity card at all costs. While one could blame Venom 3 his eagerness to present the one who must become the “Thanos” of the Sony universe, Kraven the Hunter should be sufficient in itself. Concretely, the narration will essentially focus on its hero and his journey, rather than multiplying the winks and payment preparations. At least that’s what the filmmaker says, who promises a completely independent story.
“You will see that once the film is finished, there are many things that can happen. My goal was to isolate our footage, protect it and tell a great story”.
If the first images are not particularly reassuring, we must admit that JC Chandor was able to convince spectators on several occasions. One would hope that he had the freedom of movement necessary to make a compelling action blockbuster. The presence of Aaron-Taylor Johnson is also rather exciting.
Moreover, we can still be concerned about the consequences of the significant release delay on the film. First promised an exit in July 2023, it was postponed following the strike of actors and screenwriters. It was to benefit from operation in August 2024. But competition with Deadpool & Wolverine is not something that Sony Pictures viewed very favorably and it is ultimately December 18, 2024 that hostilities will be launched. He thus finds himself faced with Mufasa : The Roi Lionsequel to Disney’s billionaire live-action remake. Who will win the battle, the hunter or the lion? The die is cast.
