This Friday, June 28, Le Comte de Monte Cristo is released in theaters, six months ahead of its broadcast date. Big budget, cast including Pierre Niney, Bastien Bouillon and Anaïs Demoustier… the blockbuster directed by Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de la Patellière promises to be one of the summer hits at the cinema.

A Montpellier madness as a setting

What the Hérault spectators may not be aware of when discovering the film is that a good part of the scenes were filmed a few kilometers from Montpellier. In October 2023, the production set up its cameras at the Château de l’Engarran, in Lavérune. The wine estate, founded in 1632, served as the setting for this historical fresco inspired by the novel by Alexandre Dumas, with its vineyards but above all its castle, a Montpellier “folly” built in 1750 and listed as a historic monument.

The castle was built in 1750 and is listed as a historic monument.

“With its architecture, its French gardens and its rich heritage, the château perfectly embodies the refined and dramatic atmosphere of Alexandre Dumas’ novel. It is in this setting that the directors Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de la Patellière chose to recreate the emblematic scenes of the adventures of Edmond Dantès”rejoiced the domain of Engarran.
