Disney revealed the name of the screenwriter who will take care of the next trilogy Star Warsand it's a name that doesn't particularly inspire confidence.
Despite the artistic mass graves that are episodes 7, 8 and 9 of the saga Star WarsDisney is not ready to let go of the case Star Wars. And this, although one has the impression that the firm is sailing on a drunken boat regarding the franchise. If on small screens certain derivative series Star Wars come out with honors (The Mandalorian, The Clone Wars, Andor…), others are synonymous with suffering for the fans (The Book of Boba Fett). To which is added the category of promising series nipped in the bud: we are thinking of the deletion of The Acolyte.
On the cinema side, Disney also wants to exploit the vein. And for good reason, the films of the postology each brought in more than a billion dollars in revenue (and even 2 billion for The Force Awakens). Unsurprisingly, Disney announced in April 2023 the creation of an episode 10 called New Jedi Orderwith the return of Rey.
But the film seems to be caught in a game of musical chairs, with a waltz of screenwriters, which never bodes well. After the departure of the last screenwriter who worked on Star Wars 10Disney has given the name of the replacement who will take over the matter, and that is frankly not very reassuring.
New set of Star Wars
Star Wars New Jedi Order will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (from the documentary, she directed two episodes of Ms. Marvel) and was initially to be written by screenwriters Damon Lindelof (Watchmen) et Justin Britt-Gibson (The Strain). But after their departure from the project in March 2023, they were replaced by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders). However, the latter abandoned this episode 10 in October 2024, leaving the ship without a screenwriter on board. But Disney quickly found its replacement.
Deadline revealed this information exclusively:Screenwriter and producer Simon Kinberg has signed a deal with Disney to write and produce the upcoming trilogy Star Wars. Simon Kinberg was revealed in 2005 as a screenwriter thanks to his work on Mr. & Mrs Smith. He also wrote the screenplays for Jumper by Doug Liman and Sherlock Holmes by Guy Ritchie.
But that was the screenwriter's prosperous period, because afterwards, he had a series of second-rate films and critical disappointments: Abraham Lincoln, vampire hunter, Target, X-Men: Apocalypse, Fantastic Four by Josh Trank… As a producer, it's not very good either, since despite some successful projects (Chappie, Logan, Deadpool), he also produced the indispensable trilogy ofHercule Poirot by Kenneth Branagh and The New Mutants.
Simon Kinberg also tried his hand at directing, with X-Men : Dark Phoenix et 355two films that he also scripted, and to which we will avoid attaching adjectives to remain polite. A quick look at filmography shows proximity to Marvel products and licensing operations. Given that Marvel is one of Disney's internal organs, one can imagine that Mickey Mouse House chose Kinberg because he has been around that ecosystem for a while.
Trouble Disneyxique
Simon Kinberg's journey can only arouse many fears regarding the future trilogy Star Wars (what will this one be called? The post-postlogy ? The newology ?).
Kinberg is very far from having the reputation of being a visionary screenwriter and producer, and even though he worked on the franchise Star Wars previously, as a consultant on Star Wars Rebels et The Force Awakensdifficult to imagine that we could have entrusted him with the responsibility of revolutionizing the license…
The other news that confirmed Deadlineis that the continuation of Rey's journey will indeed be a new trilogy. However, Disney had at one time mentioned the fact that it preferred to produce films individually, as for Rogue One or Solo. It seems that this creed has been discarded.
This is not entirely surprising since it should be the same for the film The Mandalorian & Groguwhich would be the first film in a trilogy, as stated by actor Giancarlo Esposito, who plays Moff Gideon in the series The Mandalorian :
“David Filoni and Jon Favreau have a new vision that continues with a film about The Mandalorian. I have a feeling everything is going to converge at some point and we're going to get a new series, movie trilogy or more. »
Episodes 10, 11 and 12 of Star Warsproduced and written by Simon Kinberg, has no release window at the moment. Regarding Simon Kinberg news, he is one of the producers of the remake of Running Man by Edgar Wright with Glen Powell and Josh Brolin, scheduled for release in theaters in 2025.
