Announced as one of the most anticipated blockbusters of the year, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is not the success the studios hoped for. While it was first at the box office since its release, another film stole its place. And it is far from deserved.

Mad Max surpassed

Furiosa has a very complicated start. Despite the excellent reviews and audience affection for the film, the prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road is having a difficult start at the global box office. The disaster is such that Australian-American production has just given up its place at the top of the box office, just one week after taking the reins. Indeed, despite its budget estimated at 168 million dollars, Georges Miller’s latest could only have brought in $11 million on American soil during its second weekend of operation, from May 31 to June 2.

A result clearly not up to expectationseven to the point of being surpassed by the latest big animated film to date, Garfield: Hero in spite of himself. Played by Chris Pratt, who you know for his role as Star-Lord, the most famous ginger cat returns 20 years later to the big screen for a new typical feline adventure. A fairly anecdotal production therefore, but which was able to anticipate the science fiction blockbuster after just one week of competition. Released the same day in the United States, Furiosa started ahead of Garfield, but the latter managed to generate $14 million over the last weekend, therefore taking the lead at the box office. Results that are not necessarily deserved.

A bland Garfield

For his return to the cinema, the gluttonous cat innovates. After Garfield: The Movie in 2004, now make way for The Garfield Movie in its original name. A title far from inspired for a film just as flat And tasteless. Rated 36% on RottenTomatoes and 2.6/5 on Letterboxdthe feature film will not have been able to conquer neither the critics nor the movie-loving public. Bad feedback, which obviously does not prevent the film from pleasing families and spectators less accustomed to cinemas. This explains its very good results at the box office.

Indeed, in almost two weeks of operation, the lasagna lover raked in nearly $160 million in total. Quite honorable figures, especially when we know that the budget is estimated at 100 million less. New proof if any were needed the quality of a film is, and never will be, entirely linked to its success. Besides, if you wish to form your own opinion, Garfield: Hero in spite of himself comes out on July 17 in France.
