In a month, one of Disney’s greatest heroines will return to the cinema. After a few difficult years on the big screen and in streaming, the big-eared firm is now banking on its strong franchises to regain the confidence of spectators. Vice-Versa 2 was a real hit this summer and it’s now Vaiana’s turn to take over. This unexpected sequel was announced for the first time at the beginning of the year, to everyone’s surprise. Disney does not have the habit of revealing its feature films only a few months before their release, but the case of Vaiana 2 is special.
Before making its way onto the cinema release schedule, the project debuted as a Disney+ series. Faced with the repeated failures of the streaming platform, the entertainment giant preferred to rework its approach to make Moana’s new adventure a successful film. To date, the first installment dominates the ranking of most watched content on Disney+, and the first trailer for this sequel reached a record number of views in just 24 hours. Suffice to say that spectators are impatiently awaiting this return, but will it be up to the task?
Having started as a series, the project had to give up Lin-Manuel Miranda’s support for the songs: a first major disadvantage. However, the latest trailer is intended to be reassuring. Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear (The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical) took over and the first extracts of the title “Go further” are proving to be quite effective. As for the storyline, we now know that the young heroine is about to experience an ever more epic and dangerous journey.

The ocean in danger again
“We will face unleashed monsters… angry gods…” exclaims Moana in the trailer. After restoring the heart of Tefiti in the first opus, the adventurer of Motunui has not finished making efforts to save the ocean. It is by receiving an unexpected sign from her ancestors that Vaiana understands that an ancestral threat weighs on the waters of the Pacific. This time, her navigational skills will be put to the test, because her destination is at the edge of the seas after a path strewn with pitfalls and dangers of all kinds.
To carry out this mission, Vaiana brings together the most promising inhabitants of her island to form a shock team. The joyful troupe will also be able to count on the support of the demigod Maui, always as prankster. Director Dana Ledoux Miller explains that the film’s storyline is inspired by ancient writings reporting that navigators from different Pacific islands took advantage of their journeys to meet up and get to know each other.
“We were inspired by this idea and imagined that a long time ago, many sea routes led to a specific place offering sailors from all walks of life a territory allowing them to come together, to learn the each other and share their experiences. Until the day Nalo – the god of storms who rejected all ideas of human brotherhood – caused the island to sink to the bottom of the ocean, forever cursing the place and destroying all paths that led to it.”
This thrilling story will be available in cinemas from November 27. As Christmas approaches, the sun and sea breeze of Vaiana 2 will make us dream of summer in the heart of winter. All that remains is to hope that this sequel is a success rather than a cold shower.
