The United Nations General Assembly is preparing, this Wednesday, to elect its 18 new members of the Human Rights Council (HRC) while 19 countries have put themselves forward as candidates. Among the most criticized applications, that of Ethiopia and Saudi Arabia. One of the countries we thought we would see among the contenders in the Western group is withdrawing: the United States. Washington has decided not to seek a second consecutive term within the main UN body with 47 members. “Yes, the United States is not a candidate,” explains an American diplomat in Geneva. But they will covet a seat on the HRC in 2028. Until then, we will remain fully engaged and active.”
