Box office France: this biopic film dethroned Kung Fu Panda 4 – Cinema News

A week after returning to the top of the box office, “Kung Fu Panda 4” must give way to something new: the biopic “Back to Black” on Amy Winehouse.

9 – Godzilla x Kong – The New Empire: 159,503 entries (cumulative: 1,050,426)

To remember

Po hoped to retain the lead at the French box office, a week after regaining it. But Amy Winehouse said “No, no, no”. Biopic dedicated to the English singer who died in August 2011, Back to Black starts at the top, accumulating 367,818 entries.

Which is enough to dethrone Kung Fu Panda 4, but not enough to exceed the 772,865 spectators gathered in one week by Bob Marley: One Love, another musical biopic of 2024, which has just crossed the two million mark. But director Sam Taylor-Johnson can console herself by saying that it is already much better than the 71,234 of Nowhere Boy, her film dedicated to John Lennon’s youth.

While waiting to see the impact that the end of the holidays as well as the May bridges will have on the destiny of the film, less than 100,000 entries separate second from seventh place, a sign of a week where diversity was a an asset as well as a limitation. Because the spectators went to the theaters, of course, but they were divided between several titles, preventing a real success.

Kung Fu Panda 4 has still benefited from these last few days, relying on a very small drop in its attendance (-17% only), to become the fourth film in the animated saga to reach the milestone of two million spectators. Even if he should, upon arrival, sign his lowest score.

On the new side, Never confess took advantage of a greater number of copies to narrowly win in front of Brothers (234,009 entries for André Dussollier and Sabine Azéma compared to 233,838 for Mathieu Kassovitz and Yvan Attal), which offers a better average per screen.

And Challengers starts in seventh position, a sign that Zendaya’s presence was not enough to convince an audience as large as that of Dune to come and witness this dizzying drama set against a tennis backdrop. But the film ends the week with the second best average per copy, and word of mouth could allow it to dream bigger.

Finally, note, in the rest of the ranking, that Godzilla x Kong crossed the million spectator mark, which makes it the third biggest success (out of five feature films) of the saga launched in 2014 with Gareth Edwards’ feature film.

And Ghostbusters – The Ice Menace now displays a cumulative total of 761,037 torn tickets. Which is therefore better than The Legacy, the previous opus of the franchise. Enough for an additional film to see the light of day?
