It is a very rare event, even unique: an Alsatian woman was struck by a meteorite. This happened a few days ago in Schirmeck in the Bruche Valley reveals our DNA colleagues this Thursday
.

This resident was sitting on her patio getting some fresh air at 4am. She heard a loud boom on the roof of her house and the rock fell on her, on her ribs causing a bruise. At first, she thinks of an animal but very quickly she understands that it is something else. “Already finding a meteorite is rare but in addition being in direct contact and it falling on you from the sky, it is an almost unique case. We haven’t had that for decades in our regions“, explains geologist Thierry Rebmann. It was he who appraised the pebble at the request of the resident and he has no doubts.

A pebble similar to a volcanic rock

This pebble looks like a volcanic rock. It is a stone that passes through the earth’s atmosphere, it is toasted due to oxygen and friction. In general it disappears completely, this is called shooting stars. Except that there was material there, about 50 grams. This meteorite is not rare in itself, it is not composed of rare metals like nickel, but what is rare is that the meteorite fell on it.“He now advises doing a thorough analysis at the Physical Institute of the Globe to find out where this meteorite came from.”The mineralogical nature allows us to have a track of the origin of this rock“.
