The 14-year-old girl had jumped from the Clémenceau Bridge. The department's two road operations officers jumped into the water to save the teenager who was transported to the Mantes-la-Jolie hospital center.
Two agents from the Eure department saved the life of a teenager. This Tuesday, January 7 in the morning in Vernon, a 14-year-old girl crossed the Clémenceau bridge before throwing herself into the Seine, writes the Eure department in a press release.
The agents take the plunge
At the same time, two operations officers from the department's roads department noticed belongings left behind on the bridge.
“They probably saw the victim and decided to take their vehicle again to go down to the Jacques-Chirac quay, 200m further on. From there, they got into the water and managed to bring the young girl back to the shore,” relates the Sdis of Eure.
Once they managed to return to the shore, a witness alerted the firefighters. Eleven people from the emergency services and six vehicles intervened quickly to examine the young girl but also the two department officers.
Suffering from hypothermia, the teenager was taken to the Mantes-la-Jolie hospital center as a relative emergency.
A heroic gesture praised
“We are all very proud of these two agents who did not hesitate for a second to help this young girl despite all the risks, the very strong current in this place and the very low temperature. They clearly intervened at the risk of their own lives”, greeted Alexandre Rassaërt, president of the Eure departmental council.
“We are in the middle of winter, during a flood period, in the Seine, where barges and boats are circulating, we could have had three victims, these two men carried out a real rescue, it is to their credit,” confirms the Sdis who salutes the good reflexes of the two agents.
“Making a rescue while limiting your own risks is essential, they had the presence of mind not to jump into the water after her,” congratulate the emergency services.
