The day of ceremonies began at 11:30 a.m. in front of the former premises of Charlie Hebdoat 10 rue Nicolas-Appert. The names of the 12 victims of the attack carried out by the Chérif brothers and Saïd Kouachi have been listed: Frédéric Boisseau, Franck Brinsolaro, Cabu, Elsa Cayat, Charb, Honoré, Bernard Maris, Mustapha Ourrad, Michel Renaud, Tignous, Georges Wolinski and Simon Fieschi.

Wreaths were then laid by the victims' families and by officials, in reverse protocol order. A minute of silence was observed, before singing the “bell to the dead” then The Marseillaise.

Tribute to police lieutenant Ahmed Merabet

A distinct tribute was paid on Boulevard Richard-Lenoir, a few meters from the former premises of Charlie Hebdoin memory of police lieutenant Ahmed Merabet, killed by the Kouachi brothers. The last moment of remembrance was dedicated to the four victims of the Hypercacher attack: Yohan Cohen, Philippe Braham, François-Michel Saada and Yoav Hattab. The ceremony was held in front of the supermarket, avenue de la porte de Vincennes, in the 20e district of Paris.

Testimonies from relatives of the victims

Many relatives of the victims of the January 2015 attacks were present to pay tribute to them. Among them, the mother of Simon Fieschi, seriously injured during the attack on Charlie Hebdo and died last October. “It’s important to be there every year (…) we hold on because we’re together”she insists.

“We are all orphans of Simon as we are orphans of all the victims of these attacks”estimates the mother of the man who was webmaster of the satirical weekly at the time of the attacks. “It touches us a lot that these events are recognized by the country, the politicians, (…) and all the efforts that are made to limit the attacks.”

The two daughters of the cartoonist Wolinski, Elsa and Natacha, were also present for the tribute in front of the former editorial office of the satirical newspaper, a first since the attacks. “It’s a painful moment (…) I don’t even know if I’ve started it, my mourning, maybe I’m starting it today”confides to France 2 Elsa, in a sob. His sister Natacha evokes “a very ambivalent moment: there is the need to be there and then there is a terrible heartbreak”.
