Morocco has recorded significant progress in promoting maternal health. Speaking last Monday in the House of Representatives, the Minister of Health and Social Protection, Amine Tahraouireported a 70% drop in the rate of maternal mortality over the past two decades. According to him, the figure reflects the Kingdom’s ongoing efforts to improve access to care and strengthen care infrastructure.

In this regard, Mr. Tahraoui highlighted the ministry’s health strategy aimed at ensuring adequate medical supervision, by providing public hospitals with vital medical specialties, which demonstrates the desire to guarantee accessible and quality health services to the population. the entire population, he added. In this context, the Minister of Health recalled the opening of positions to train specialist doctors on a contractual basis, through residency competitions organized annually. To this end, 41 doctors specializing in gynecology and obstetrics will be recruited during this year, alongside 12 others currently being recruited, he announced.

Still as part of improving health sector indicators in Morocco, 850 million dirhams have been allocated to the development of hospitals and the improvement of health services in 2024, said Mr. Tahraoui. For the latter, these initiatives are part of an ambitious reform dynamic materialized by significant investments and by reforms intended to fill current gaps.

Strengthening human resources

Continuing efforts to improve access and quality of care, 6,500 new health professionals will be recruited in 2025, the minister said. This strengthening of human resources aims to fill the deficits in qualified personnel in several regions of the country. The new recruits will help improve patient care and reduce inequalities in access to care, he stressed.

Better management of drug stocks

Faced with the recurring problem of stock shortages of medicines, the government official mentioned a series of measures to compensate for these failures. Among these is the creation of theMoroccan Medicines Agency and health products, an entity whose mission will be to guarantee optimal management of the supply chain. This new structure must also ensure transparency and security of stocks, while establishing forecasting mechanisms to avoid shortages likely to endanger the health of citizens, he added.

Another priority of the ministerial strategy, the promotion of generic medicines. The latter, being recognized for their effectiveness equivalent to that of original drugs, represent an affordable and accessible solution, underlines the minister. By facilitating their registration and marketing, the Moroccan authorities aim to diversify the pharmaceutical offer and respond more quickly to patients’ needs.
