In the coming days, quite a few beneficiaries of the Family Allowance Fund (Caf) could notice variations in the amount of their benefits. This annual review, even if it is usual, weighs heavily on the budgets of families, especially those who really rely on this aid for their daily lives. Family allowances are an important part of the budget for approximately 10% households in greatest difficulty. While some will see their aid decrease, others risk even no longer being entitled to it depending on their income.

What happens with the annual review of benefits?

Every year, in January, Caf redoes its calculations to adjust the rights of its beneficiaries. This concerns several types of aid such as family allowancespersonalized housing assistance (APL), childcare assistance and also assistance for disabled adults or children. On average, we are talking about 210 euros paid per month, but this can change depending on what each household declared as income.

In the spring, all French people must declare what they earned the previous year to taxes. For this year, the 2023 tax information was sent to the Caf between August and October 2024. This data allows the Caf not only to adjust benefits but also to avoid any fraud or incorrect payment.

Can your income lower your benefits?

A key factor in calculating benefits is the change in household income. A notable increase between 2022 and 2023 could well reduce your social benefits. But be careful, these changes will not be applied immediately. The payment scheduled for January 5, 2025 will remain as is; it's from February 5, 2025 you will see the new amounts appear.

For those whose income exceeds the resource ceilings, this could mean a complete withdrawal of aid. It is therefore essential for each recipient to understand how their resources influence their eligibility for different social assistance.

Key dates not to be forgotten

Keep a few important dates in mind: spring 2024 to declare your income, then between August and October 2024 when your tax data is sent to Caf, and finally January 2025 when your rights will be recalculated annually. These steps are crucial because they determine how much you will receive throughout the following year.

This annual update has three main goals: to avoid any possible fraud, to prevent the undue payment of benefits and to precisely adjust aid according to what each household actually received as income.

The Family Allowance Fund (Caf), hand in hand with the tax administration, plays a central role in this complex but necessary process to ensure fair and just distribution of public resources.

In short, even if some households risk seeing their aid reduced or eliminated, it is essential for all those affected by these benefits (current or future) to remain informed and vigilant in the face of possible financial changes linked to the Caf. This not only allows effective management of the family budget but also avoids any unpleasant surprises during the next annual adjustment.
