Benefits will soon drop for many French people, here's why

In a few days, the amounts paid by Caf will no longer be as high for certain beneficiaries.

This is support that counts enormously in the finances of beneficiaries: 210 euros on average per month. Family allowances represent around 10% of the budget of the most precarious households. Essential help for the most deprived in their daily expenses. Some, less in financial difficulties, can also benefit from it.

However, within a few weeks, the amount received by many households should vary downwards. Bad news ahead for portfolios and which could surprise those who are not paying attention to the calendar.

Every year, in January, the Family Allowance Fund recalculates the rights of all beneficiaries. Family allowances, APL, childcare assistance, for disabled adults or children… So many financial supplements paid by the State, the amounts of which vary according to income.

In the spring, all French people declared to the tax administration their income received during the year 2023. This information was then sent to the Caf, between August and October, so that the organization is aware of the exact resources of their beneficiaries. The objective: to avoid fraud and pay undue benefits.

These elements now received, each local Caf will now proceed, in January 2025, to an adjustment of services according to these new financial elements. Those taken into account will therefore be those of 2023 (which you declared for taxes in spring 2024). Therefore, if your salary and/or other resources have increased in 2023 compared to 2022, you could be affected by a reduction in the amount of social benefits.

The change in the amount of the benefit will not apply to the payment of January 5, 2025 but from that of February 5. For some, it may not be a reduction but a pure and simple elimination of benefits if income exceeds the new ceilings in force.
