Since mid-December 2024, the four media libraries of Cliff Country – Falaise, Morteaux-Couliboeuf, Potigny and Pont-d’Ouilly – offer a new “Bookinou” service aimed at its young readers.

But what is it? Bookinou is a “storyteller” or “story reader” who can accompany the reading of an album out loud, by adding sound effects.

Its ambition is to give a taste for and access to reading to all children aged 2 to 8 years old. It is an opportunity for the child, who does not know how to read or who is starting to learn to read, to listen to a story and read the words from the book or simply look at the images.

Astrid and Sylvia, the two librarians.

The librarians of the Pays de Falaise media libraries have chosen to make this “storyteller” available for consultation on site.

How does it work?

The “Bookinou” service is offered in the children’s area of the media libraries. The principle is simple, the child sits on small colored cushions in a special reading cabin, also very colorful. A cocooning corner just for them, in their size, a quiet time for one, two or three children.

“It’s easy to use, no need for an adult,” continues Astrid.

Each book has a sticker and when you pass the sticker over the storyteller, it triggers the story. For some stories, the child hears a noise to be able to turn the page.

Astrid, librarian.

In the 4 media libraries, between 70 and 85 stories are available to children. Some are recorded by the librarians themselves or by CM1 or CM2 students, texts narrated between 3 and 12 minutes depending on the age.

The first children who were able to benefit from this service quickly adopted this book medium, without waves or screens. They fend for themselves.

“At the moment this service is in consultation on site but we would then like to offer it so that children can take it home to listen to the stories at home. »

The “Bookinou” service is available in the 4 Pays de Falaise media libraries for young audiences free of charge. In consultation on site.
