After more than two weeks of closure of Mayotte airport, Island expected a significant influx of passengers when commercial flights resumed on January 1st. Also, the red high traffic system had been triggered, prohibiting access to the terminal for certain categories of people, passengers without tickets and accompanying persons in particular.

A device lifted this Monday, January 6, announces Réunion-Rolland Garros airport. Consequence: access to the terminal is once again open to everyone, passengers and accompanying persons. They are nevertheless invited to consult the airport website.

“We had worked on the fact that many people wishing to go to Mayotte would come very early in the morning and that there could be somewhat heated discussions between passengers who wanted to leave”justifies the interim director of the airport, Christian Fouyer, afterwards.

But the expected rush ultimately did not take place. “The companies managed these departures very well by calling these passengers in advance, which meant that very few passengers without tickets came to the airport to try to catch the plane”he specifies.

It is therefore a return to normal for Gillot airport, with three flights to Mayotte planned and 5 to 600 travelers expected today.

Nothing unusual during this summer holiday period, when the airport sees around 315,000 passengers pass through, mainly with , between December 20 and January 20.

Gillot airport, however, remains mobilized as part of post-Chido crisis management and the airlift to Mayotte, its platform serving as a transshipment hub between France and Mayotte.

Since the start of operations, more than a thousand tonnes of goods have been handled by cargo teams on special chartered flights. Friday, January 3, the airport again welcomed two cargo flights with nearly 100 tons of essential goods on each flight, to be processed and then transported by plane or by sea in the hours and days to come to destination Mayotte.

The airport also provided financial support to Mayotte through a donation of €80,000 to the French Red Cross.
