“Guadeloupe, seeds of the future”, a new documentary broadcast on January 6 on Guadeloupe La 1ère

This Monday, January 6, 2025 at 8:50 p.m., Guadeloupe La 1ère offers a new issue of “Horizons” during which a captivating documentary entitled Guadeloupe, seeds of the future, a 52-minute film, written and directed by Sophie Vernet and produced by Docland Yard, dives into the heart of an ambitious project led by two women determined to change the agricultural face of their island.

Naomi, one of the best chocolatiers in the world, and Natacha, a retraining farmer, have decided to reinvest their native land by breathing new life into the historic cultures of cocoa and vanilla. These once-flourishing cultures had been abandoned, leaving behind a forgotten heritage and a suffering local economy. In a bold and visionary gesture, these pioneers chose to transform this past into an opportunity for the future.

In areas spared from chlordecone pollution, a pesticide widely used in banana plantations and responsible for serious soil contamination, Naomi and Natacha are bringing cocoa pods and vanilla pods back to life. Their ambition goes beyond simple production: they want to build an economically viable and environmentally friendly local agri-food sector. By directly processing their harvests on site, they create added value for Guadeloupe and show the way towards economic autonomy.

To succeed in this challenge, Naomi and Natacha do not just work the land. They are also involved in education and transmission. Through meetings with middle and high school students and young farmers, they share the complex history of these cultures, intimately linked to the dark pages of slavery. Their objective is clear: to initiate vocations and motivate young people to commit to the future of Guadeloupean agriculture.

This documentary is not only a testimony to agricultural renewal. It is also a vibrant tribute to the resilience, commitment and vision of these women. Naomi and Natacha show that with courage and perseverance, it is possible to overcome environmental, economic and social challenges to build a better future.

Don't miss this inspiring meeting which highlights the immense potential of Guadeloupe and the strength of those who work for a more just and sustainable world. “Guadeloupe, seeds of the future” is an ode to reconstruction, innovation and the power of the collective.
