Return of Donald Trump, interference by Elon Musk in Europe and the situation in Syria… Nathalie Loiseau, MEP, national secretary of the Horizons party, was the guest of “8h30 franceinfo” on Sunday January 5.

Trump's threat on European customs tariffs: “Everyone is preparing to retaliate”

Donald Trump will be inaugurated on January 20, in Washington, during the inauguration ceremony. The future American president is raising concerns about all-out trade wars by threatening China, Canada and Mexico to increase customs duties as soon as he comes to power in January.

Donald Trump also threatens Europe to increase customs tariffs. “Donald Trump complains that his compatriots buy European products. He wants to impose customs tariffs against European countries. He will create inflation in the United States,” judge Nathalie Loiseau.

“We must be ready, and the European Commission, the European Parliament, everyone is preparing to respond if necessary, to this type of threat which only produces losers. A trade war only produces losers.”believes the MEP.

Elon Musk's interference in Europe

The MEP also mentions Elon Musk's outings and interference in Europe. Recently, he has supported the German far right, and called for new elections in the United Kingdom. “He attacks the British Prime Minister with terms of incredible violence. (…) He does the same towards the German Chancellor. I did not find a tweet from Elon Musk vis -towards Valdimir Putin or the Chinese president.”

“It is blatant interference from the richest man in the world, who uses his fortune to use his social network to spread distortion (…) Fortunately the European Union has taken steps.”, declares Nathalie Loiseau.

Situation in Syria: “We will have to help the Syrian people”

“The interest of everyone, of the Syrians, but also ours, is a stabilization of Syria,” Horizons MEP Nathalie Loiseau, who is also the European Parliament's rapporteur on Syria.

This Friday, Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot visited Syria, accompanied by Annalena Baerbock, his German counterpart. It has been 13 years since and Syria no longer had diplomatic relations. “I think it’s very good,” judge Nathalie Loiseau, who also wishes to go to the country to “listen with modesty”, car “there have been half a million deaths in Syria, so we need a little modesty when we go there to listen to the testimonies (…)”.

“We will have to help the Syrian people,” she pleads, because “the interest of everyone, of the Syrians, but also ours, is a stabilization of Syria.”

Some rebels who overthrew the regime of Bashar al-Assad came directly from Islamist movements, such as al-Qaeda, through the HTS group, from which the new Syrian leader Ahmad al-Chareh, also known as Abu, came. Mohammed al-Joulani. “I don't believe” that “Syria will resemble a European democracy”, recognizes the MEP. “Should we still turn a blind eye to Islamist radicalism? I don’t think so either”she maintains.
