A mixed result for the winter Luna Park

The abundance of snow pushed city dwellers to the mountains and reduced the number of visitors to the Plainpalais plain.

The Geneva fairgrounds will dismantle their stands and rides from 7 p.m. this Sunday evening, after a month of presence on the Plainpalais plain. Like every year, the attractions arrived at the beginning of December in the city center for the Luna Park winter session.

But the abundance of snow in the mountains quite early in the season reduced the overall number of visitors, for a “mixed” result, in the words of Christian Walder, president of the Geneva Fairgrounds Union. Open in November for some, sometimes a week before the scheduled date, the Swiss and French resorts have effectively attracted Genevan ski lovers in droves, particularly on weekends.

Mountain rush

“The town was empty, we could see it clearly,” continues the fairground representative. There were parking spaces everywhere around Plainpalais, which is very rare! People came up even in the small stations.” Many of them actually took a exceptional record at the start of winter, with conditions that had not been so good for sometimes more than fifteen years.

The often gloomy weather during the month of December did not help attendance, with an estimated drop of 30%. “We worked during the day, but in the evening, it was more difficult,” continues Christian Walder. As usual, Luna Park had around forty rides.

Remember that an agreement has not yet been reached between the fairgrounds, who would like to continue to place their rides on the harbor during the month of August, and the City of Geneva, which wants to move them to the plain of Plainpalais, in order to to encourage swimming and sports activities at the lakeside. In 2023, the fairgrounds refused to sign an agreement which allowed them to settle on the docks for the last time.
