The Moroccan Confederation of SMEs (CMTPME) announced on Sunday that more than 40,000 companies were declared bankrupt in Morocco in 2024, at a time when the unemployment rate increased from 16.2% in 2014 to 21.3% in 2024, a record never recorded in the last ten years.
The president of the CMTPME, Abdellah El Fergui, quoted by local media, warned that company dissolutions “could see a sharp increase if urgent measures are not taken to help the hundreds of thousands of SMEs overwhelmed by debts accumulated during the Covid-19 pandemic.
He also refuted the data shared by the Moroccan Observatory of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), saying that the Observatory “has erroneous statistics which only identify companies with legal personality.” The CMTPME added that the Observatory “does not take into account very small businesses managed by individuals”.
These data come in a context where unemployment in Morocco reached a historic record in 2024.
According to the results of the General Population and Housing Census (RGPH 2024), the unemployment rate in Morocco increased from 16.2% in 2014 to 21.3% in 2024, a record never recorded in the last ten years .
