The government of Pedro Sánchez has approved a budget of 2.5 million euros intended for the acquisition of vehicles and equipment to strengthen the capacities of the Moroccan authorities in terms of border surveillance, various Spanish media said. This measure is part of a European project for integrated border and migration management in Morocco, coordinated by the International and Iberoamerican Foundation for Administration and Public Policies (FIIAPP), led by the Minister of Affairs foreign countries, José Manuel Albares.

The funding is divided into two main lots. The first provides for the purchase of 183 motorcycles with a total value of 660,000 euros, intended for patrol operations in difficult-to-access areas. The second batch concerns 33 buggies, for an amount of 1.9 million euros, which will offer enhanced mobility in desert and rugged environments.

The vehicles, whose delivery is scheduled within a maximum period of nine months, will initially be sent, in all likelihood, to the port of Tanger Med. In addition, the contract includes specialized technical training to guarantee the maintenance and operational durability of the equipment provided.

According to the Spanish executive, this initiative aims to “reduce vulnerabilities linked to irregular migration” and of “strengthen border control and surveillance capacities” by adopting an approach described as humanist, aligned with the Moroccan National Immigration and Asylum Strategy (SNIA).

In addition to this latest contract, the cooperation between Rabat and Madrid includes all-terrain vehicles, trucks, ambulances, semi-rigid boats, thermal cameras and night vision devices, bringing the total to more than 120 million euros under the mandate of Pedro Sánchez.
