The old premises of the legendary Bab Marrakech market, dating from the 1920s, were recently demolished to make way for an ambitious rehabilitation project. This colossal project aims to combine modernity and respect for heritage, with a reconstruction in accordance with contemporary standards while retaining the historic soul of the place.

Adopted during the meeting of the Casablanca Municipal Council in May 2024, this project is based on collaboration between several entities, including the Wilaya of Casablanca-Settat, the prefecture of Casablanca-Anfa, the Council of the region, the municipality of Casablanca and Casa Aménagement. The overall budget reaches 80 million dirhams, financed by contributions from the Regional Council (20 million) as well as the Municipal Council and the Prefectural Council (30 million each).

During the two years of work, a temporary market will be installed on rue Boukraa, in the Sidi Belyout district, near the Casablanca exhibition center. Spanning 3,600 m², it will include 187 commercial units of 7 m² each, accompanied by sanitary and technical amenities, in order to minimize the impact of the work on the activities of traders.

The future Bab Marrakech market will offer an innovative infrastructure including an underground car park with 160 spaces, 217 shops and 48 kiosks. Modern spaces, such as loading and unloading areas as well as refrigerated equipment for fishmongers, will complete the project. A large public square will also be set up to welcome residents and visitors in a friendly setting.

By revitalizing this emblematic site, Casablanca is taking an important step towards the revitalization of its medina. This project promises not only to preserve the cultural heritage of Bab Marrakech, but also to revive economic activity with a commercial space adapted to the expectations of modern traders and consumers.
