US Secretary of State Blinken said members of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and militias allied to Sudan have been found responsible for crimes of genocide.

In a press release regarding Sudan, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) committed genocide by carrying out systematic attacks targeting specific ethnic groups.

Recalling his previous statements on war crimes committed by the RSF, Blinken stressed that even more serious crimes have been carried out.

He added that, based on this information, he came to the conclusion that members of the RSF and allied militias committed genocide in Sudan.

Blinken also highlighted the massacres attributed to the RSF, specifying that these groups continue to carry out direct attacks against civilians, killing in a “systematic manner” and being part of a campaign of ethnic cleansing whose victims report exploitation. , repeated rapes and other forms of violence.

The US Secretary of State finally announced that, due to his role in these attacks, the leader of the RSF, General Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, was added to the sanctions list, and demanded that those responsible for these attacks be brought to justice.

The war in Sudan

Since April 15, 2023, Sudan has been plagued by clashes between the regular army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a former militia that has become a powerful paramilitary force. These fighting broke out against a backdrop of disagreements over military reform and the integration of the RSF into the regular army.

Despite multiple mediation initiatives, no lasting ceasefire could be established.

According to the United Nations, Sudan is facing one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, with more than 20,000 dead since the start of the conflict. More than 3 million people have fled the country and nearly 9 million have been displaced within Sudan. More than 25 million people are in need of urgent humanitarian aid.
