Belgian football is in mourning.
Gilbert Van Binstformer emblematic defender of Anderlecht, passed through Téfécé and the Red Devils, died at the age of 73 from Parkinson’s diseaseas his son confirmed this Friday morning.
A career that smells of violets
Van Binst started at Anderlecht in 1968 and enjoyed a career rich in trophies: two league titles, four Belgian Cups and European triumphs with two Cup Winners’ Cups and two European Super Cups. After a brief stint in Toulouse in 1980, and a return to the country in the jersey of Club Bruges, where he bowed out in 1983.
In 15 selections with the Red Devils, he notably participated in Euro 1972, organized in Belgium. Amateur of the third halves, the terrible child never hesitated to say what he thought, whether on the pitch, in the locker room or in his column for The Newspaper. After football, he juggled coaching in the lower divisions and a career change in the sale of fabric softeners, while continuing to delight fans of anecdotes by working for the media.
