This Thursday, January 2, in the early evening, around 6:30 p.m., Sarlat firefighters intervened for carbon monoxide poisoning in a building of 4 apartments in downtown Sarlat.
The gas boiler
The origin of the poisoning was identified as the gas boiler in the apartment concerned. A family of four residing in this accommodation was victims of toxic carbon monoxide fumes. The 54-year-old man, his 44-year-old wife, and their 12-year-old daughter were all poisoned. They were taken care of by firefighters and rushed to the Sarlat hospital center.
The 22-year-old son, present in the apartment, was not affected by the poisoning and was unhurt.
10 firefighters
The intervention of 10 firefighters, supported by two emergency vehicles, made it possible to secure the scene and treat the victims as quickly as possible.
The authorities recall the importance of regularly checking the maintenance of boilers and heating systems, in order to prevent the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, an odorless and invisible, but potentially fatal, gas.
Prevention tips
Carbon monoxide poisoning can be avoided by good ventilation of premises and regular maintenance of heating appliances and chimneys. In case of doubt or symptoms (headaches, dizziness, nausea), it is crucial to leave the home immediately and contact emergency services.
