Since the start of hostilities for the 2025 Junior World Championship, Team Canada Junior has not met the requirements of observers. Whether in the composition of the formation, in the way of playing or others, each decision was criticized and with good reason. It’s not okay at all. Personally, I don’t think it’s a question of talent. We have to look elsewhere.
A Junior World Championship marked by indiscipline
Team Canada is undisciplined. Everyone sees that. However, the thing that stands out the most about this indiscipline is especially the way in which the penalties are accumulated. These are not 2 minutes because of the intensity or hockey games. We are talking here about pure indiscipline, laziness, frustration, even revenge on occasion. The Canadians are busy fighting themselves and nothing seems to stop them.
We have a few individuals like Ethan Gauthier who work and play the right way, but these elements are too rare in the lineup. This gives a whole which does not work in the same direction and which does not even manage to beat a team that it should have defeated 10-0 like Latvia. It’s discouraging to see and one can question the composition of the lineup.
A lack of talent?
Some argue that the decision-makers at Team Canada Junior left hockey players at home who could have made a difference in terms of talent. Michael Misa, Carter Yakemchuk, Zayne Parekh, etc. are all high-profile prospects who could have contributed. Despite their absence, I believe that the team has all the elements to dominate the competition.
We have talent, speed, versatile elements, toughness and offense. No other organization has this much depth, but the cake doesn’t rise. We made choices to prioritize a team concept instead of only taking the best players. The strategy defends itself and I believe it is the right one. On the other hand, team leaders, including coaches, do not lead the troops in the right direction.
Team Canada Junior and its lack of robustness
There is far too much selfishness among the players. Many individuals only seem to play for their personal record and do not pay the price. Like the ground game in football, the forecheck is the hallmark of a winning team in hockey. Team Canada Junior is unable to apply their robustness despite the presence of dominant elements to this effect in the lineup. Nothing seems assumed in the way of playing and we remain on the periphery while prioritizing low percentage games. It goes in all directions and there is no consistency whatsoever.
We can point the finger at Dave Cameron, he is certainly one of the people responsible for the team’s setbacks, but we must also look at the players. In fact, they are the ones who must look themselves in the eye and who must question their priorities. What is more glorious? Accumulate good statistics for one of the most embarrassing editions of Team Canada Junior or proudly reach the podium despite all the obstacles of the tournament? I hope we see a completely different mentality on the ice next Thursday, because it won’t be an easy task.
