(National Unity – International Struggle – Corsicainformation.org – Published on December 31, 2024) The Popular Union for the Liberation of Guadeloupe expresses its indignation at the rejection of the request for release of Rodrigue Petitot, an emblematic figure in the fight against the high cost of living in Martinique and the defense of the rights of Afro-Caribbean peoples.
In the grip of judicial harassment that nothing can justify, Rodrigue Petitot is unjustly kept in detention until his trial on January 21, 2025 where he risks ten additional months in prison, convicted for his comments made on a social media platform. This political relentlessness, under the guise of justice, is a blatant attack on freedom of expression, a fundamental pillar of our democratic struggles. During a TikTok live, Rodrigue Petitot simply exercised his right to denounce injustices and call for civic engagement. The term “attack” was clumsily diverted from its true context, which was aimed at democratic participation through legitimate candidacies. We condemn the complicit silence and the obvious politicization of the Public Prosecutor's Office in this matter. Our people will not remain silent in the face of the system of pwofitasyon and repression in place in the last French colonies. The Popular Union calls for massive mobilization to defend fundamental freedoms and judicial fairness. In these critical times, solidarity is our best tool to challenge prejudice and institutional intimidation. Let us continue to uphold the values of dignity, freedom and equality which are the heart of our movement.
Together, let's resist and break the chains of oppression.
For the Popular Union for the Liberation of Guadeloupe,
The Secretary General
Jean-Jacob BICEP
