Instant bank transfers soon to be free in France

Transfer money to a bank account in seconds rather than having to wait one or two days for it to appear: the instant transfer option is offered by most banks… but often charged. From January 9, they will have to offer this service in all countries in the euro zone and at the same price as a traditional transfer. In , the latter is generally free.

French banks therefore have no other choice but to offer this service free of charge. And this, no later than January 9, 2025. In countries that have not adopted the single currency, banks will benefit from an additional period until 2027, and even 2028 for payments from an account denominated in their national currency . The instant transfer service must also be available every day of the year and at any time.

At the end of February, the European Union adopted a regulation which imposes these new conditions on banks in member countries. The Council of the EU, which brings together the 27 member states, approved the project already validated by the European Parliament on February 7. The objective? Popularize the use of this transfer method, which is faster than the traditional method.
