For several days, the Arve valley has been experiencing an episode of atmospheric pollution. After triggering the orange alert this Saturday, the Haute-Savoie prefecture activated red vigilance this Sunday, December 29.

The “combustion” type air pollution episode is expected to last until midnight on Monday, December 30. “No change in weather conditions is expected for Monday, December 30: the temperature inversion remains present across the entire region as well as cold temperatures.indicates the Atmo observatory.

The air quality deteriorated significantly throughout the weekend across the entire territory, particularly in the following communities: Pays Rochois, Pays du Mont-Blanc, Faucigny-Glières, Vallée de Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, Cluses -Arve and Montagne as well as Châtillon sur Cluses.

This episode of PM10 fine particle pollution has intensified, pushing the prefecture to take new measures. Following the transition to alert threshold 2 (red alert), residents of the areas concerned are asked, for example, to no longer “use individual wood heaters for supplementary or pleasure use (fireplaces, stoves, etc.)“but also to reduce”the temperature of buildings at 18 degrees“.

The transport sector is also affected by the new regulations which came into force this Sunday. Traffic speed is notably lowered by 20 km/h on roads where the maximum limit is set at 90 km/h or more. A differentiated traffic plan has also been put in place for the most polluting heavy goods vehicles.

The Haute-Savoie prefecture also recommends that its citizens and visitors ventilate their homes or limit their physical activities. You can find all the regulatory measures in force and the prefectural recommendations on the prefecture website.
