Mayotte: the leader of the PS demands “acts” from François Bayrou

In an open letter, the first secretary of the PS criticizes the new Prime Minister for not having gone “immediately” to the archipelago, for having announced the composition of his government on the day of national mourning and for having “seemed seek to put the importance of the disaster into perspective.

“There is no doubt that if it were a department in , the attention paid would be increased tenfold,” says Olivier Faure.

“On all (the) questions which call for a return of the State in this French department, you will be able to count on constructive but demanding socialists so that your words are transformed into actions”, he points out while François Bayrou is expected Sunday in Mayotte.

“The debris continues to pile up, raising fears of health risks, water and food remain rationed, electricity is cut off for half of the population in the northwest of the island and in the razed shanty towns, the residents feel abandoned and are waiting for help,” writes the leader of the PS.

“Can you tell us where the work on the census of deceased people undertaken by the teams of the Prefecture and the Minister of the Interior is?” he asks while the human toll still remains very uncertain, with 39 deaths officially counted.

“Beyond reconstruction, it will also and above all be necessary to invest in this island in the Indian Ocean which has been ignored for decades as if its only interest had basically been to ensure a presence of France in this vast area economic and maritime in the great game of global competition”, he still insists.
