Appointed by President-elect Donald Trump to lead the Department of Government Effectiveness (DOGE), Elon Musk is preparing to undertake a major overhaul of the US federal administration in 2025. His goal: to reduce public spending by $2,000 billion. dollars, by July 4, 2026, by simplifying regulations and reducing the size of government. An initiative that has sparked strong criticism, with some accusing Musk of promoting a far-right and anti-social ideology. But nothing seems to reach the Tesla boss, who strongly defends his project, saying it aims to eliminate bureaucratic inefficiencies to stimulate economic growth, as Argentina’s Javier Milei did.
An ambitious plan to transform the federal administration
The DOGE project, developed by Elon Musk and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, foresees a series of drastic measures to restructure the federal government. Among them, a massive reduction in workforce, the elimination of subsidies and extensive deregulation of economic sectors. The stated objective is to create a more agile and less costly administration, relying mainly on executive actions to circumvent legislative delays. Acting as “outside volunteers” Musk and Ramaswamy plan to disband DOGE once their mission is accomplished. The deadline is symbolically set for July 4, 2026.
However, the implementation of these reforms faces significant obstacles. The complexity of government procedures and the need for congressional oversight could slow or even hinder the proposed changes. Additionally, similar initiatives in the past have often failed to produce lasting results, raising doubts about the feasibility of Musk’s plan.
Political links with European conservative parties
Alongside his commitment to the United States, Elon Musk has forged links with several conservative parties in Europe. In Germany, he has expressed support for the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party, stating on its X platform (formerly Twitter) that ” only the AfD can save Germany “. This position sparked mixed reactions, with some seeing it as interference in German politics.
In the United Kingdom, Musk met Nigel Farage, leader of the Reform UK party (which now has more members than the historic Conservative Party), and would have considered financially supporting his campaign to the tune of £78 million. This alliance aims to challenge traditional British parties, reflecting Musk’s desire to influence the European political scene in favor of conservative movements. Further south, in Italy, Musk appears to have developed a special relationship with Prime Minister Giorgia Melonileader of the Fratelli d’Italia party, making each of their public meetings an event on social networks.
These political engagements in Europe, combined with his role in the United States, illustrate Musk’s growing influence on the international political scene. The fact remains that despite the controversies surrounding him – and which he knows how to stage – the eccentric billionaire remains determined to carry out his government reform project. The coming months will be decisive in assessing its ability to overcome the political and administrative challenges that stand in its way, and in proving that its initiatives can indeed lead to a more efficient and responsive administration.
