Electric energy production in Morocco saw an increase of 2.3% in 2023, reaching 42.38 terawatt hours (TWh), according to data presented by the president of the National Electricity Regulatory Authority (ANRE) , Zouhair Chorfi. This development is mainly attributed to the development of renewable energy sources, which have contributed to a notable increase in installed capacity, now at 11.42 gigawatts at the end of 2023.
Demand for electrical energy also increased, recording an increase of 4% compared to 2022, totaling 43.95 TWh. Of this demand, 96% was met by national production, a key indicator of the country's self-sufficiency in the electricity sector.
Wind power led among renewable sources, with an installed capacity of 2,017 megawatts, marking a 30% growth from the previous year. Solar energy and hydroelectricity have also contributed to this green development.
The president of ANRE also announced the review of tariffs for the use of the national electricity network from March 2024, as part of the national energy strategy, aimed at increasing the share of renewable energies in the energy mix. ANRE is also working on new tariffs for medium voltage distribution and excess production of renewable electricity, with the aim of stimulating investments in green energy.
This assessment is part of Morocco's strategy to become a global model in terms of energy transition, thanks to its exceptional resources in solar and wind energy and its commitments to the fight against global warming.
