The image is impressive. This Thursday, December 26, emergency services were alerted of an accident on departmental road 2 in the town of Monein, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. At midday, a regional bus, traveling between Monein and Pau, left the road before overturning into the ravine which borders the road.
According to initial information communicated by the department's firefighters, four people were on board the vehicle. A young woman died in the accident. The three other victims, including the 55-year-old driver, were transferred to Oloron-Sainte-Marie hospital, around twenty kilometers from the scene. They suffered minor injuries.
According to the first information communicated, it was a driving school which was passing by after the accident which tried to rescue the passengers of the bus. No other vehicle is believed to have been involved in the accident. Numerous resources are currently deployed on site.
Five fire engines are on the scene, as well as the police, the prefect of Pyrénées-Atlantiques and local elected officials. The reasons for the accident are, for the moment, still unknown. The bus driver was interviewed by the gendarmes to try to clarify the circumstances of this tragedy.

On site, the sub-prefect of Pau, Samuel Gesret spoke. “We have no information on the circumstances of the accident, so the gendarmerie forces deployed on site will carry out the investigation in order to find out a little more.“, he explains.
Traffic on the main road is temporarily interrupted until the end of the afternoon, while the vehicle is inspected. New information should be communicated soon.
