For more than 20 months, several A8 motorway interchange ramps have been occasionally closed around Nice (Alpes-Maritimes). This, as part of the project to extend the Menton interchange ramp (n°59).
It’s now over. If the official inauguration is planned for January 20, 2025, the new insertion ramp of the interchange towards Nice is already reopened to traffic.
Three major projects
The development of this new ramp involved a lot of work. First, the relocation of the departmental road 22 along the entrance ramp, but also the repositioning of the insertion ramp on the A8 towards Nice.
It was also necessary widen the deck of the Cabrolles viaduct by 10 to 12 meters. The latter now has an additional lane. Seven nights were spent just installing the 800-ton metal framework allowing this widening.
242 meters more for secure insertion
All these developments have caused traffic disruptions, particularly at night, with regular closures of ramps.
Evil for goodwill say the Vinci Autoroutes teams, since they took the opportunity to carry out repair and maintenance work on the equipment of other entrance and exit ramps.
As a bonus, the new elongated strap allows for more comfortable, “smoother and more secure” insertion. Its length has actually been tripled, from 90 to 332 meters.
A green challenge for a modern highway
And Vinci has rolled out all the actions carried out in favor of sustainable development: the reuse of all machine washing water, the use of coatings containing up to 30% recycled materials, or that of 100% low carbon concrete and cement.
This is without forgetting the steels used in the concrete, which came from 90% recycled sectors, or the origin of the steel for the framework of the viaduct deck, half of which came from recycling sectors. In short, an expensive and restrictive project, but resolutely focused on respecting the environment.
