Which book will be crowned “best seller of the year 2024”?

The best-selling title of the year calculated by the GFK institute will be revealed by Weekly at the end of next week. A few days before the unveiling, the weekly ranking appears frozen since the beginning of the month, dominated by the YouTuber’s BD-Manga Inoxtag (Michel Lafon). The latter has exceeded 265,000 sales and is approaching the 309,000 sold for the Goncourt prize. Houris of Camel Daoud (Gallimard), who therefore ended up exceeding Jacaranda of Gail Faye (Grasset), big success of the literary season with more than 250,000 sales and winner of the Renaudot prize.

The latter will have a hard time catching up between now and Christmas on Mona’s Eyes of Thomas Schlesser (Albin Michel) which peaked at 303,000 sales since its release at the end of January or A wild animal of Joel Dicker (Rosie & Wolfe), which has sold more than 410,000 copies since February. Another star of the rays, Guillaume Musso displays 370,000 sales for someone else (Calmann-Lévy).

Another novel which has exceeded the 235,000 sales mark, The Ritz Bartender of Philippe Collin (Albin Michel) is also among the successes of the year. The podium, however, seems compromised for the last Melissa Da Costa, Stand up (Albin Michel), which sold more than 150,000 copies after its release at the start of the literary year. The young novelist could nevertheless keep her trophy as the best-selling author of the year, with her other titles still well placed in the Top 50 bestsellers.

On his side Olivier Norek experienced his first literary return with his Winter Warriors (Michel Lafon), winner of the Renaudot prize for high school students which is approaching 150,000 sales. Still on the novel side, despite great distinctions at the end of the year, Madelaine before dawn of Sandrine Collette (JC Lattès), crowned with the Goncourt prize for high school students and the Goncourt prize for prisoners, is aiming for 100,000 sales, just like The Jaguar Dream of Miguel Bonnefoy (Rivages), double winner of the Grand Prix du roman de l’Académie française and the Prix Femina, which has sold 105,000 copies to date.

Romance or comics?

In the Essays department, despite taking control of the ranking this week, Resist of Salome Saqué (Payot) sold half as much as What I’m looking for of Jordan Bardella (Fayard), which has exceeded 135,000 sales and is just behind Memoricide of Philippe de Villiers (Fayard), at 137,000. Not enough, however, to hope to get ahead With the fairies of Sylvain Tesson (Les Équateurs), which is approaching 200,000 sales since its publication in January.

What if it was a comic book again, the best seller of the year? The latest album of Lucky Luke sign Jul which has dominated the weekly ranking for several weeks (Lucky Comics) and has reached 140,000 sales, does not seem able to impose itself, any more than the new Blake et Mortimer d’Yves Senté and the late André Juillard which is approaching 160,000 copies or the last Mortelle Adele of Mr Tan et Diane Le Feyer (Mr Tan & Co) which is also flirting with the 160,000 sales mark. This year without news Asterix therefore offers more uncertainty as to the sales pole, which were dominated the previous two years by comics: L’Iris blanc of Fabcaro et Didier Conrad in 2023 and The endless world of Jean-Marc Jancovici et Christophe Blain in 2022.

Unless the surprise comes from romance? Sarah Rivensexceeds for example the 241,000 copies sold with Lakestonepublished at the beginning of the year by Hlab.
