We recently reported on 3DJuegos how a group of scientists They had named several species of frogs named after Star Trek captains. The reason? They emitted a very high-pitched whistling noise similar to that of some devices in the science fiction saga. This made me think about how they created some of these sounds those responsible. Today I come to talk to you about a very curious one.
For the 2009 Star Trek film reboot, directed by JJ Abrams, they wanted to modernize many elements of the original 1966 series, and that included its sound section, incorporating new effects and bringing back many others from the past. Ser thus wanted to make a product recognizable among fans, “but at the same time, incorporate something that is new and fresh, current”.
“This is the sound of the Enterprise door”
And this was the case, more or less, of the noise that the doors of the Enterprise make when they open, for which Ann Schibelli, sound designer, looked at a Russian train:
“The sound effect of the Enterprise door opening is such a distinctive sound… that we’ve heard so much throughout the original series… I wanted it to sound, you know, classic. At the time I was working on another project and we had recorded several Russian toilet empties on a train. They had a really cool vacuum sucking sound. As soon as I heard it I said: ‘this is the sound of an Enterprise door’“.TrekToday.
Of course, watching Star Trek after learning this anecdote will be… different. If you want to see what a Russian train toilet sounds like when emptying, here it is. You can watch the film today, December 19, on the Paramount Network starting at 10:00 p.m. (Peninsular time). It is also available on SkyShowtime and Netflix.
JJ Abrams’ Star Trek trilogy is waiting to get the green light for a fourth installment, although fans are slowly losing hope as eight years have passed and the film studio seems to have other plans for the franchise. of science fiction and space exploration (and war).
