Almost a year ago, on December 15, 2023, Frédéric Mortier, Les Républicains (LR) mayor of Longué-Jumelles, was sentenced to a fine of €2,000. The Angers criminal court found him guilty of provoking discrimination on grounds of religion, due to comments made, in the context of his teaching profession, to one of his students. He was nevertheless acquitted of various charges: incitement to discrimination was upheld for one student but dismissed for two others; the facts of slanderous denunciation and harassment pursued were also dismissed by the court.

As a result, the prosecution appealed against the partial acquittal and Frédéric Mortier against his conviction. The Angers Court of Appeal will therefore look into this case again on Thursday December 12 afternoon.

Racist comments accused

As a reminder, teacher of economics and management at the Joseph-Wresinski professional and private high school, Frédéric Mortier was suspected of having made racist remarks against three students, between 2019 and 2021. Sentences addressed to a boy from Muslim faith and two others from Central Africa were singled out by the prosecution. The mayor of Longué-Jumelles defended himself by evoking humor, second degree and an atypical teaching method.
