In Saint-Malo in particular, a city of which he was mayor for 25 years, and in Brittany in general, tributes have been pouring in since the death of René Couanau, at the age of 88, on Saturday November 30, 2024.
In Paris too, from the Palais Bourbon where the National Assembly sits, today, Tuesday December 3, we paid tribute to the memory of the man who was a deputy for Ille-et-Vilaine for 23 years.
“A very active deputy and a great mayor”
The Prime Minister himself took advantage of his speech to pay tribute to René Couanau. “He was a very active deputy for Ille-et-Vilaine. He was also a great mayor of Saint-Malo,” declared Michel Barnier.
“It happens, moreover, and this is why I allow myself this word, that a very long time ago I was a member of the same ministerial cabinet as him. He was my chief of staff to the Minister of Youth and Sports…”
Michel Barnier then suddenly paused, boos rising in the hemicycle.
According to several media outlets which reported the incident, a member of parliament, in the ranks, chanted: “We don’t care. » Which would have provoked this strong reaction from other deputies judging the remark “scandalous”.
“We are talking about the memory of a man who has just passed away”
The President of the Assembly took the floor in turn and expressly targeted the benches of the rebellious parliamentarians: “I hear that we respect each other in this assembly. We are talking about the memory of a man who has just passed away, Madam Deputy. It’s scandalous,” thundered Yaël Braun-Pivet.
“This Assembly has changed a lot…”
Applause and hubbub gave way to Michel Barnier, with a serious face, finishing his statement with: “Just respect, and a little more calm too. Mr. Chassaigne (communist deputy to whom he was responding), I happen to think like you, no doubt that this National Assembly has changed a lot…”
