Teachers attacked by students in Reunion: educational medical institutes to fight against violence

Several events linked to crises of children suffering from behavioral disorders have recently occurred in schools. Teachers were slightly injured in Saint-Denis, Saint-Benoît and even . In this context, the director of the ARS announces a plan to deploy educational medical institutes in schools in .

Repeated violence against teaching staff in Reunion Island. In just one month, 3 teachers were victims of aggression by students with behavioral disorders. The latest occurred at the Central School of Saint-Denis. A teacher was injured by scissors. A context which questions the educational model of the inclusive school. Anger is growing among teachers.

We do not understand the logic of talking about an inclusive school, when in fact, it practically does not exist. We are waiting for institutions to take action regarding these cases of violence. It is expected that protocols will be applied in cases of school violence to protect officers and children within the school who are also in danger in these cases“, reacts Carole Thémèz, deputy general secretary of SAIPER.

Launched in 2005, the inclusive school is not the source of the problem according to the rectorate. For the technical advisor of the academy, teachers must be trained in supporting these students.

Faced with behavior like this, we can only wonder. How to do better? How to prevent this from happening? How can we help the student get better? This is still our first concern. For this, the school is not alone. We have partners, specialized establishments, specialized services. They come to where the students are educated, in collaboration with their teacher“, explains Jean Devries, inclusive school technical advisor.

To combat this violence, the ARS announced the deployment of educational medical institutes in schools. According to the rectorate, there are 25 fewer reports this year than in 2023 over the same period.
