The general budget rapporteur calls on Macron to resign

Charles de Courson, MP for and member of the Libertés, Indépendants, Outre-mer et Territoires (Liot) group, openly called for the resignation of French President Emmanuel Macron. During an intervention on LCI this Wednesday morning, the general budget rapporteur attributed responsibility to the French head of state for the current “political chaos”, following the dissolution of the National Assembly last June.

Through this intervention, Charles de Courson pointed out a controversial decision, even within the presidential majority. “Who is causing the political chaos? It was indeed the President of the Republic when he made this dissolution that even his own friends did not understand,” he accused. According to the elected official, this decision accentuated the fragmentation and instability of the Lower House, making any consensus impossible, particularly on the budget vote.

While the opposition raises the possibility of a new motion of censure, De Courson proposed a radical alternative: the resignation of the president himself. Referring to the historical example of Charles de Gaulle in 1969, he said: “When there is a political crisis, what did General de Gaulle do? He had the courage to resign. »

However, such a decision would have complex institutional consequences. An early presidential election would not allow an immediate reconfiguration of the National Assembly, which would remain divided into three blocs without an absolute majority, according to the current configuration. De Courson, however, insists on the need for a new dissolution as soon as a possible successor is elected to try to constitute a clear parliamentary majority.

As for his position on a potential motion of censure, elected official Liot remained reserved, indicating that his group will make a collective decision next Tuesday.

As a reminder, the National Assembly is currently at the heart of heightened tensions. The New Popular Front coalition, bringing together LFI, socialists, ecologists and other left-wing groups, confirmed its intention to table a motion of censure in the event of the government resorting to 49.3 to pass the financing bill for 2025.

Such an initiative could also receive support from the far right, which is critical of the budget, which it describes as economically ineffective and socially unjust. If this motion is adopted, it could plunge the country into a political crisis unprecedented under the Fifth Republic.
