The “relative comfort” came from the local ballot boxes. This Sunday evening, at the end of the first round of the legislative elections, the former Minister of Health Aurélien Rousseau came out on top in the seventh constituency of Yvelines, the old stronghold of Michel Rocard.

Under the banner of the New Popular Front (NPF), he totaled 34.68% of the votes, ahead of the outgoing MP (Renaissance) Nadia Hai (29.32%) and the TV host and chef Babette de Rozières (25.79%), labeled LR/RN. “I am happy and proud of the mobilization of the activists, but no one can detach themselves from the national context,” he comments. Tonight, we have a brain here and a brain on the side of the national results.”

A little balm to the heart after the cold shower at 8 p.m., when NPF supporters gathered in their HQ in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine discovered the scores of the RN on a national scale. The former minister of the Borne government was installed under the immense portrait of Rocard plastered on a wall. He welcomed the announcement of the national results like all the activists present. The expressions are serious, the looks empty.

“Twelve million voters for the RN, that’s so huge. There is shock tonight in the face of this violence, immense sadness. But also anger at the conditions in which these elections were called,” he said.

This Sunday evening, the two other qualified candidates have not yet expressed their views on a possible withdrawal. In 2022, the outgoing MP (Renaissance), Nadia Hai, former Minister of the City under Jean Castex, had won the 7th constituency of Yvelines with 55.64% of the votes in the second round, ahead of the Nupes candidate Michèle Christophoul.

Babette de Rozières, TV presenter, restaurateur in Maule and former close friend of Valérie Pécresse, responded to Éric Ciotti’s invitation to throw herself into the battle under the LR/RN banner. “There are republican principles that must prevail in the context of a three-way race: faced with the risk that the RN will have an absolute majority, we must withdraw,” believes Aurélien Rousseau. “We have played with fire enough in recent weeks.”

The former minister would later add on X that “nothing is decided, the RN obtaining an unprecedented score here”. It is almost midnight and the results of the constituency are confirmed. In front of the HQ, an activist arrives in tears. She is 20 years old, a design student and her heart is “cut in two”. “Here, it’s the first time we’ve been on the left since Rocard. It’s beautiful, she sobbed. But France… France is over: we’re RN for years. »
